For The Love Of All Things Strength, Pick Up The Heavy Weights

You’ve probably heard it in class: “Go a little heavier.” And if you’re honest… your first thought might be: “I don’t want to get hurt.”, or “What if I can’t do it?”, or even “Isn’t lighter better?”.
We get it. But here’s the truth: Progress doesn’t happen inside your comfort zone.
What’s actually happening when you lift heavier:
When you challenge your muscles with heavier weight, you create tiny breakdowns in the muscle fibers. That might sound like a bad thing—but it’s actually the goal. Because when your body repairs those fibers, it rebuilds them stronger than before. That’s how you build muscle. And here’s where it gets even better…
The more muscle you have, the more calories your body burns at rest.
Not just during your workout.
Not just during class.
All day long.
That’s why strength training, especially when it challenges you, is one of the most effective ways to change your body composition, increase strength, and support long-term health.
Why We Encourage You to Go Heavier
When a trainer tells you to pick up a heavier weight, it’s not random. We’re paying attention to:
- Your form
- Your control
- Your consistency
- Your effort
We’re not asking you to go heavier to prove something.
We’re asking because:
- You’re ready
- Your body can handle it
- And it’s what your body needs to actually progress
Sometimes, you just need someone to show you what you’re capable of.
Let’s Redefine What “Heavy” Means
There’s a big misconception around lifting heavier weights.
Heavy does NOT mean:
- Losing control
- Sacrificing form
- Risking injury
And to rebuke the biggest misconception of them all, lifting heavy WILL NOT MAKE YOU LOOK “BULKY.” Unless you’re eating 5,000 calories and 200g of protein a day, FOR YEARS ON END, lose the idea that lifting heavy weights will make you look like a bodybuilder.
Lifting heavy DOES mean:
- The last few reps feel challenging
- You have to stay focused to keep form
- You’re pushing—but still in control
- You have found a way to break down the muscle group in a safe/effective manner
That’s where the magic happens.
The Real Benefit: More Than Just Physical Strength
Every time you pick up something you didn’t think you could…something shifts.
You don’t just build muscle.
You build:
- Confidence
- Resilience
- Trust in your body
And that carries far beyond the gym.
We will always meet you where you are—and push you when you’re ready.
So next time you hear “Go Heavier”…pause before you automatically reach for the same weights and ask yourself:
👉 Am I capable of a little more today?
Because chances are… you are.
And we’ll be right there with you.
